When Rebecca's mother dies in 1870 rural Tennessee, the 18 year old red-headed free spirit finds herself with no land, little money, no husband, and no prospects. So, in answer to an advertisement for a “mail order” bride, she sets out for the frontier--Verde Valley, Arizona. Traveling west with a cavalry wagon train, Rebecca encounters Indian raids, fends off dishonorable advances, makes unexpected friends, and begins to learn to survive in a new, harsher environment. When she arrives in Arizona, her adventures intensify, as she strives to make a life in the wilderness and comes face to face with her new husband's deadly secret. Fire Hair is an exciting, heart-felt, and realistic human adventure set in the vastness of the American West. Life-long Western scholar Harvey Honsinger captures the details of daily life in the 1870's what people ate and wore and used and shot, as well as how they talked and what they felt. He brings to life the men and women of that age the brave and the cowardly, the honorable and the dishonorable, the good and the evil. With enough horse-sweat and gunsmoke to satisfy readers of traditional Westerns, Fire Hair also has the authenticity of a well-researched historical novel, and the grandeur of an epic.

When Rebecca's mother dies she finds herself with the contents of two trunks at the age of nearly 18 and without prospects in rural 1870 Tennessee. She does have a sense of adventure, a no-nonsense attitude and plenty of practical skills as a working woman of her day. She can cook, sew, keep house, shoot, ride, work on a farm and care for the sick. Her brother reluctantly helps her to find and answer an ad for a mail order bride.

Doug's advert does not promise a paradise, clearly stating that he lost his first wife to an Indian attack, but he does offer a home and financial security. He organises the journey for Rebecca under the protection of a cavalry wagon train bound for the fort near him in Arizona.

At the start of the book we learn of the brutal death of Doug's wife at the hands of renegade Indians. Doug finds her mutilated body and is deeply traumatised. He seeks equally brutal revenge. I wondered at this point how I could accept him as Rebecca's husband.

The truth is that this is a multifaceted story with complex characters, great historical detail and original romance.

I enjoy reading Leigh Greenwood and Honsinger reminds me of his realism, strong characters, feisty women and feel for life in the American West.

I can't say much about the plot without spoiling the story. I will say that Rebecca is a courageous young woman with all the pioneering spirit of the best of her time and wise beyond her years. Doug is a tortured and flawed man who finds it hard to come to terms with what has happened in the past. The cavalry unit has an interesting mix of characters, especially the cook and the officer Sam Evans, who come to mean a great deal in Rebecca's life, as do the local Indians her husband so despises. The Indians are fascinated by her red hair and drawn to her `magic', but Doug believes that ALL Indians are to blame for his loss.

The story is fast paced with plenty of dramatic tension as well as being a moving historical romance.

I will definitely look out for Honsinger's next novel.
